As working patterns evolve, so too must the spaces in which we work. While many modern offices feature inviting breakout areas, bold design features, and well-stocked kitchens, these aesthetic choices don’t always translate into higher productivity or improved wellbeing.

Challenge 1: Maintaining Focus in Open-Plan Layouts

Open-plan offices were originally intended to enhance collaboration. However, many employees find that constant background activity makes it difficult to concentrate. Studies suggest it can take over 20 minutes to fully refocus after an interruption.

Introducing designated silent zones — areas where conversation and phone calls are discouraged — can help. In parallel, non-bookable focus rooms provide quiet space for individuals to work without needing to schedule time in advance. These spaces can be especially useful for tasks requiring sustained concentration or deep thinking.

Challenge 2: Managing Distractions from Noise and Movement

Even low levels of ambient noise — such as typing, chatter, or footsteps — can disrupt attention. Some organisations have introduced white noise machines or sound masking systems to reduce the impact of these distractions.

In many office settings, smaller meetings take place in rooms with a single screen, requiring one person to present while others observe. This can limit interaction and shared ownership of ideas.

Providing two-person pods with independent plug-in screens allows for more equitable participation. Colleagues can work side-by-side, comparing inputs and refining ideas without needing to alternate screen control or shift location.
